Where the Hell Should You Go for the Holidays? A Miami Escape Plan
Holiday travel from Miami doesn't have to nuke your savings. Five real escapes for fall and the holidays — with actual flight prices, honest cost math, and exactly when to book.
Where the Hell Should You Go for the Holidays? A Miami Escape Plan
It's mid-September. Which means the holidays are coming, and everyone you know is about to do the same dumb thing they do every year: panic-book a $900 flight to sit on someone's couch in Ohio.
Don't be everyone you know.
If you live in Miami, you are sitting on the single best departure airport in America for cheap, warm, interesting escapes. Short hops to the Caribbean, Central and South America that people in Chicago would kill for. The only question is where — so let's answer it properly. Pick your situation below. I did the annoying part (prices, timing, the fine print) so you don't have to.
First, the cheat code nobody uses
Thanksgiving week is the cheapest week of the entire year to fly internationally. That's not a vibe, that's data — Going's fare trackers found it, because while everyone else is flying domestic to eat turkey with their in-laws, international seats go begging and airlines quietly slash prices. The Points Guy flagged deals like Boston to Dublin for $384 roundtrip over Thanksgiving week.
Translation: if you've ever wanted to go somewhere interesting for the holidays without getting robbed, Thanksgiving week is your window. Not Christmas week. Never Christmas week. Christmas week is where airfare goes to die.
Pick your situation
"I need sun and I refuse to make decisions."
Go: Montego Bay, Jamaica.
This is the single best fare deal in the Caribbean right now, and it's not close. Going's data has Montego Bay averaging $344 roundtrip — roughly 54% below standard pricing — making it the cheapest Caribbean destination to fly to from the US. Why? Airlines keep adding seats and undercutting each other on the route. Their fight is your discount.
The play: fly in, get a room near the Hip Strip or out toward Negril if you want it quieter, and let the island do the rest. Jerk chicken that ruins all other chicken. Water so clear it looks fake. Zero itinerary required.
Flight reality from Miami: Nonstops everywhere, often under 2 hours. This is barely even travel.
Honest cost: ~$344 flight + $120–180/night for a solid hotel + cheap food if you eat where locals eat. Four days lands around $900–1,100 all in.
What might annoy you: The aggressive vendors on the beach and the resort-bubble effect if you never leave the property. Leave the property.
Book it: Now-ish for fall; Thanksgiving week for the holiday play.
"I want to feel far away on a short flight."
Go: Cartagena, Colombia.
Two-ish hours from Miami and you land in a 500-year-old walled colonial city on the Caribbean that looks like a movie set and eats like a dream. This is the best value old-world-beautiful city in the hemisphere — rooftop bars in Getsemaní, ceviche for pocket change, day trips to the Rosario Islands when the heat wins.
Flight reality from Miami: Short nonstop, routinely one of the cheapest South America fares from MIA.
Honest cost: Flights often $250–350 RT. Boutique hotels in the old town run $80–150/night. Street food is absurdly cheap; a great dinner is $25. Four days can genuinely come in under $800.
What might annoy you: The heat is real and the humidity doesn't negotiate. December–April is the sweet spot; fall is hotter and rainier.
Book it: Flexible — but prices climb hard for Christmas week, so either go before mid-December or accept your fate.
"No passport. No problem."
Go: San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Sometimes the smartest move is the one with zero friction. Domestic flight, no passport, no customs line, no currency math — and you still get Old San Juan's blue cobblestones, El Yunque rainforest, and beaches that embarrass most of the Caribbean. For a 3–4 day holiday reset, this is the path of least resistance that doesn't feel like settling.
Flight reality from Miami: Dozens of daily nonstops, frequently under $200 RT if you're not picky about dates.
Honest cost: ~$180 flight + $130–170/night in Condado or Ocean Park + $15 piña coladas you will absolutely overpay for at least once. Four days around $800–950.
What might annoy you: Holiday weeks bring mainland crowds and the prices to match. Go the first two weeks of December and it's a different island.
Book it: Early December is the sweet spot — good weather, sane prices, before the Christmas surge.
"I want a city that actually eats."
Go: Mexico City.
Fall is CDMX's victory lap. Day of the Dead (early November) turns the entire city into the most beautiful celebration of anything, anywhere — marigolds, parades, ofrendas, the whole thing. And the food scene is, pound for pound, the best on the continent: street tacos that cost a dollar and ruin $30 tacos forever, plus some of the world's best fine dining if you want to go full bougie for one night.
Flight reality from Miami: ~3.5 hours nonstop, and fares are consistently reasonable — often $300–400 RT.
Honest cost: $350 flight + $70–120/night for a great Roma Norte or Condesa Airbnb + food so cheap you'll feel guilty. Five days around $900–1,000, and you'll eat better than anywhere else on this list.
What might annoy you: Altitude (7,300 feet — take it easy day one), and Day of the Dead week books up fast.
Book it: For Día de los Muertos, yesterday. For December, soon. This one rewards planners.
"I want to disappear."
Go: Caye Caulker, Belize.
"Go slow" is the island's actual motto, painted on signs everywhere, and for once the marketing is true. No cars, no stress, reef snorkeling ten minutes offshore at Hol Chan, lobster season running into the fall. Fly into Belize City, water taxi over, and your biggest decision all week is which beach bar.
Flight reality from Miami: ~2 hour nonstop to Belize City, then a $20-ish water taxi. Easy.
Honest cost: Flights often $350–450 RT. Guesthouses $80–130/night. Food is simple and good. Four days around $900–1,000.
What might annoy you: It's tiny and quiet — if you need nightlife, you will be miserable. That's the point, though.
Book it: Fall is shoulder season = fewer people, better prices. The secret is just not telling anyone.
The booking rules (tattoo these on your brain)
Thanksgiving week = international deals. Everyone flies domestic; you fly to Dublin for $384. Be the contrarian.
Christmas week = the most expensive 10 days of the year. Either book it two months out or go the first two weeks of December instead and save 40%.
Track, don't stalk. Put every fare on Google Flights price tracking and walk away. The alert does the obsessing for you.
From Miami, the Caribbean and northern South America are your home turf. Stop overpaying to fly somewhere cold when paradise is a 2-hour flight.
The actual point
Here's what I believe: most people don't need another list of "top 10 destinations." They need someone to look at their dates, their budget, and their mood — and tell them where the hell to go.
So that's the idea we're building toward. Tell us when you're free, what you can spend, and what kind of trip you need. We'll tell you where.
For now: pick a situation above, book the flight, and have a better holiday than everyone on that couch in Ohio.
